The main purpose of the forums is for players to communicate and help each other. Our aim is for you to be able to have fun in a safe and secure environment. In order for us to do this, please take the time to read and follow the Code of Conduct.
The Jagex Forum Code of Conduct details exactly what is and is not acceptable behaviour within the Jagex Forums. At the top of some of the forums can be found a "sticky" or "stickies" (a thread that permanently stays at the top, containing important information related to the forum it's in), which explain various aspects of the Jagex Forum rules. These have all been put in place to ensure that the forums are a friendly, respectful and most importantly, secure environment to be in.
The Code of Conduct is easy to follow and should hold the answers to most of your forum-related questions.
We urge all users to treat others as they would like to be treated and enjoy the wonderful gaming community.
We hope you enjoy using our forums.
Many thanks from Jagex Community Management.
Each rule is listed below, along with examples of possible offences. They are followed by some related questions and answers to help you understand the rule and its effects.
The following guidelines are not all-inclusive and may not address all manner of inappropriate behavior. Please remember that you must always treat others with the same respect and courtesy you would wish to receive.
Don’t be offensive or disruptive.
You must not use any language that may be considered by others to be offensive, distasteful, racist or obscene. This includes swearing, deliberately bypassing the language filter and using innuendo.
Also, you must not post about any subjects that may cause offence to your fellow players. This includes discussion of any activities which are illegal or which could cause harm to health or property. In addition we will not tolerate any form of spamming, or other disruptive posting behavior on the Forums.
We have this rule to maintain a pleasant environment in the Forums. There is no excuse for using inappropriate language or posting about subjects that are not suitable for players of a wide range of ages and nationalities.
Account Issues
In addition to the rules above, you must not post about any account issues you may have on the Forums. Your account and its current status is a private matter between you and Jagex. As such, you should visit the appropriate section of our website to resolve your issue.
Discussing another player
Please do not name or discuss another user, unless they have given you the permission to do so, everyone deserves privacy after all. Claiming that the other user is your own character will not be allowed either. This includes the posting of bounties, as well as posting for other users.
Spamming and Flaming
Spamming is a pointless message that offers no room for discussion, or disrupts the forum community. Spam posts/threads waste both player's and moderator's time, and therefore will not be tolerated.
Flaming is the act of maliciously insulting or provoking another user. Going out of your way to be deliberately hurtful or offensive is something that will not be tolerated. Flaming is a serious attack on another user and is highly damaging to the community.
You must not trick, cheat, or deceive other players.
Lying to other players for your own personal gain is not in the spirit of the game.
You may not advertise items for sale, which you do not actually possess. You may also not ask for payment in advance for any goods or services.
If you don't understand why we have this rule, try to imagine how you would feel if you had spent hours achieving something and then somebody else tricked you out of it. We want our games to be fun, and being scammed is anything but fun.
Do not deceive, or attempt to deceive another player into giving you their password/bank pin.
This type of malicious behaviour will not be tolerated at any level.
You must not exploit, attempt to exploit, or advertise any errors/faults/bugs you encounter in our software.
This includes giving other players step-by-step instructions on how to find and/or abuse them.
Any exploits that you find must be immediately reported to Jagex via Customer Support. There is no need to post your problem or opinion about an in-game glitch on the forums; it will not solve the problem.
You should report any bug, either in-game or on the website, by using the 'Report a bug/fault' link from the website.
We obviously want to fix any bugs as quickly as possible. Using the 'Report a bug/fault' system ensures that your report is seen promptly by the bug-fixing staff. If you post it on the forums, they might not see it at all!
Where can I view bugs that have already been reported?
By going to the bug reporting system in the Customer Support section of the website, you will see a list of bugs that have already been confirmed. You will be able to see if the confirmed bugs are waiting to be fixed, fixed but waiting to be uploaded, or already fixed. Please do not report bugs that are already on the confirmed bug list.
Please note that if we feel that a bug will encourage bug abuse, it will not be posted on this list.
You must not impersonate, or attempt to impersonate a Moderator of any kind.
We have this rule in place so that players who require help or advice can be sure it is coming from an appropriate source.
All posts by Jagex Moderators have a gold background. They have a gold crown next to their username and the title 'Jagex Mod'.
All posts by Forum Moderators have a green background. In addition, there is a small green crown next to their username and they have the title 'Forum Mod'.
Please remember that a Moderator will never ask for your account, or contact information. Anybody who does should be reported immediately.
Backseat Moderation.
Attempting to act like a Moderator on the Forums is inappropriate. While your intentions may be good, you will only provoke arguments and flaming due to your lack of actual FMod status. If you come across something severe that requires an FMod's immediate attention, please use the appropriate system to report it.
Please leave the moderating to the Moderators and enjoy your time on the Forums instead.
You may not share, transfer, or trade your account with anybody else.
You may not sell, transfer or lend your account to anyone else, nor permit anyone else to use your account, and you may not accept an account that anybody else offers you.
We have this rule for two reasons. Firstly, many of the accounts that people try to sell are actually accounts they have stolen. By buying the account, you are helping them profit from their crime and encouraging them to do it again!
Secondly, this rule is for your protection. People who share their accounts run the risk of losing them, because either the person using the account won't give it back, or they will break a game rule causing your account to be banned.
Posting on behalf of another user.
You cannot post in the forums on behalf of another user. Posting is a member's privilege. If the other person is a member, they can post for themselves. If not, they shouldn't be extended a member's benefit. This also applies for any other accounts you may own.
You must not use any other program, or tool which gives you an unfair advantage over others.
You must not attempt to use other programs (e.g. bots, macros or autominers) in conjunction with our games to give yourself an unfair advantage. Also, you may not circumvent any of our mechanisms designed to automatically log out inactive users.
Discussing or advertising any such software or activities is not allowed on the forums. Any posts about these subjects will be removed and action may be taken against your account as posting about it may only encourage the use of such software.
You may not use multiple accounts to give yourself an advantage over others.
You may create more than one Jagex account, but if you do, you may not log in more than one account at any time, and they must not interact with each other in any way. This includes 'drop trading' or any other method of item transfer.
We have this rule to maintain a fair gaming experience. We don’t want our games to become a game where everyone feels they need to use multiple accounts at once just to compete! It’s much better to team up with your friends.
Discussion of multiple logging in is not allowed on the forums. Also, you may not use the forums to arrange trades using a third party to transfer items between your accounts, since this is a breach of the rule.
Can I play a game and browse the forums at the same time?
You may play a Jagex game and be in the Forums at the same time. It will not be seen as a multiple login and no action will be taken against your account because of it.
We do not recommend that you leave your character unattended in-game, though, since monster attacks or random events can occur and your character may be killed because of it. As a general guide, the only time you should use both parts of our website is when you are doing non-combat training and are in a 'safe' location.
You may not encourage others to break any of the rules.
Examples of encouraging others to break any of the rules include:
- Convincing other players that the rules are different to what they actually are.
- Flaming other players (trying to get a reaction from other players by using offensive language against them.)
- Posting to say that you've broken a rule and got away with it.
- Anything which promotes rule breaking in a positive manner.
You must not misuse the services of Jagex, attack Jagex Ltd, or manipulate the rules to your own ends.
You must not misuse Jagex Customer Support. This includes threatening or reporting an innocent person, supplying false information, and abusing Jagex staff.
We have this rule so we can help and assist you as quickly as possible. Misuse of Customer Support prevents us from helping players who genuinely need assistance.
False Reports.
Submitting a report to Jagex is a serious matter. False reports waste a Moderators time and prevent us from helping genuine players.
Please check that what you are reporting needs to be reported, and that you are reporting it in the correct way.
You are not allowed to actively advertise websites in the Forums.
You are not allowed to actively advertise websites in the Forums. This includes advertising any product or website. This includes naming, and general direction to a website via popular nicknames or encouraging searching.
For security reasons, we cannot allow you to post website URLs or guide players to other websites. This rule includes fansites and clansites.
The reason for this is that many sites are deliberately designed to steal account details or infect players' computers with keyloggers, trojans, viruses or other malicious software. Also, some sites host content which is offensive or otherwise inappropriate for Jagex’s audience.
To protect our players from coming to harm due to visiting such a site - whether deliberately or accidentally - we have to forbid the discussion of any site other than the official Jagex website.
Can I talk about other computer games?
You may discuss other games, but please remember that posts about competitive MMORPGs are not allowed. Posts about other genres are fine. There are to be no posts along the lines of “Game X is better than RuneScape.” Please be careful when discussing any game that contains adult themes, since discussion of these may be in breach of Rule 1.
Exchanging Jagex items or benefits in other online games, for real-life money/items or other real-life services is not allowed.
This includes any item, or service not within a Jagex Ltd product.
Remember that your Jagex account, and anything that goes with it, remain the property of Jagex Ltd.
We don’t want our games to be the kind in which you can buy your way to success; if we let players start doing this it devalues the game for other players. We feel your status in real life shouldn’t affect your ability to be successful in the game.
You must not exchange or give out any personal information or contact details on the Forum.
We have this rule in place to protect the privacy and saftey of all players. Giving our personal information can put your account security at risk. It is also potentially dangerous to give your contact information to people you do not know.
Personal details are considered to include full name, your age/date of birth, email addresses, instant messenger screen names/game tags/contact details, telephone numbers or your home/school address.
To ensure fairness to all players, *all* instances of Personal Details will be hidden for the players protection, and to prevent encouragement of sharing further Personal Details.
You must not misuse the Forums, or harass/abuse any Moderator for their actions.
You must not misuse the forums. Although we aim for a fun and friendly atmosphere, you must remember that the main purpose of the forums is for players to communicate with one another in a safe and secure environment.
This includes the harassment of Moderators, as using the forums to attack them is not what it is for. This type of behavior will not be tolerated in the slightest.
This is because a Moderators actions are limited by Jagex and any action they take against a player on the Forums is due to strict Jagex guidelines.
Please note that our Moderators and their actions are monitored by us, so any inappropriate actions or behaviour will be dealt with by us.
What about my freedom of speech?
Since Jagex owns and operates these private forums for paying members, the company reserves the right to decide what may or may not be posted.
This is not a breach of your freedom of speech; it is simply to protect all players from content which they might find offensive or inappropriate. Remember that our games are enjoyed by players of many ages and nationalities; please respect that others may not have the same point of view as you do.
